Metamorphism Flashcards
process of changing the
characteristics of a rock as a result
of changes in temperature,
pressure, or reactions with hot
fluids.
Metamorphism
Slate is a product of metamorphism from
a protolith which is shale.
is a pre-existing rock
that undergoes metamorphism.
protolith
This is the process where there is a
growth in size of the mineral grains
of pre-existing materials.
This is the most common process
involved in metamorphism.
limestone to marble; clay into
muscovite mica.
Recrystallization
It is the formation of new
minerals from the pre-existing
minerals due to heat.
Phyllite is a mica-rich
mineral rock. When clay
undergoes neocrystallization, it
forms mica.
Neocrystallization
It refers to the change in mineral structure but with the
same chemical formula (example: andalusite to kyanite).
Phase Change
Minerals with the same chemical formula but different
mineral structure are called
polymorphs
It takes place when
minerals are dissolved in
areas with high pressure
and recrystallize in other
areas with low pressure.
Pressure Solution
It occurs when
mineral grains soften
and deform at high
temperatures.
Plastic deformation
recrystallization, neocrystallization, phase
change, pressure solution, and plastic deformation.
