Metallic bonding Flashcards
What do metal elements exist as?
Giant metallic lattice structures
What is metallic bonding?
The positive metal ion being attracted to the sea of delocalised electrons surrounding it
Do metals have a high or low boiling point?
High
Why do metals have the boiling point they do?
There Is strong electrostatic attraction between the positive metal ion and the delocalised sea of electrons
The more electrons…
The stronger the bonding will be
Why does Mg2+ have a higher boiling point than Na+ when they are in the same period?
Mg2+ has 2 delocalised electrons whereas Na+ only has one
How are metals malleable and ductile?
No bonds holding specific ions together so metal ions can slide over each other when pulled
Why are metals good thermal conductors?
The delocalised electrons can pass kinetic energy to each other
Why are metals good electrical conductors?
Their delocalised electrons can move and carry a current
Are metals soluble? Explain your answer
No
Their metallic bonds are strong
