Group 2 Compounds Flashcards
When group 2 elements react, what are they oxidised from and to ?
0 to +2
What is produced when group 2 metals react with water?
Metal hydroxide
Hydrogen
Why do elements react more readily down the group?
The ionisation energies decrease
What is the solubility of group 2 hydroxides?
Solubility increases
What is the solubility of group 2 sulfates?
Solubility decreases
What is the most insoluble group 2 compound?
BaSO4
What is barium sulfate useful in? How does this work?
Medicine - X-Rays (barium meals)
Barium sulfate is opaque to X-Rays so the patient swallows the barium meal which coats the tissues and causes them to show up on the X-ray
What is used in the extraction of titanium?
Magnesium
How is titanium extracted?
The main ore, titanium(IV) oxide (TiO2) is first converted to titanium(IV) chloride (TiCl4) by hearing it with carbon in a steam of chlorine gas.
Titanium chloride is then purified by fractional distillation, before being reduced by magnesium in a furnace at 1000 degrees Celsius
What is the overall reaction of the extraction of titanium?
TiCl4 + 2Mg -> Ti + 2MgCl2
How is acidic sulfur dioxide can be removed from flue glasses? What is this process called?
Reacting with an alkali
Wet scrubbing
What can be used for wet scrubbing?
A slurry made by mixing the calcium oxide or calcium carbonate with water
What waste product is made when sulfur dioxide reacts with the alkaline slurry?
Calcium sulfite
What are the reactions for the removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gases?
CaO + 2H2O + SO2 -> CaSO3 + 2H2O
CaCO3 + 2H2O +SO2 -> CaSO3 + 2H2O +CO2
What is a use of calcium hydroxide?
Neutralise acidic soils in agriculture
