Addition polymers Flashcards
What are polymers?
Long chain molecules made up of monomers joined together
What is addition polymerisation?
Double bonds of alkene open up and join together
What does n stand for when you draw a polymer?
The number of repeating units
What is a substituted alkene?
An alkene where one of the hydrogen atoms has been swapped for another atom or group
How do you work out what the monomer is?
Look at the side bonds and join them up to form double bonds
How do you name a polymer?
poly(X)
X is the name of the monomer
Are polyalkenes reactive? Why? Why not?
No, very unreactive.
Main carbon chain of the polyalkenes are usually non-polar
Why are longer chains stronger and more rigid?
They have stronger intermolecular forces
What is PVC made of?
Chloroethene monomers
Why is PVC a hard but brittle material?
- Delta negative charge on chlorine
- Delta positive charge on carbon
- Permanent dipole dipole forces between polymer chains
What is PVC used in?
Drain pipes and window frames
What does a plasticiser do?
When added to a polymer, it makes it more bendy
How does a plasticiser work?
Gets in between the polymer chains and pushes them apart
What is plasticised PVC used in?
Electrical cable insulation
Flooring tiles
Clothing
