E/Z iosmers Flashcards
What are stereoisomers?
isomers that have the same structural formula but have a different arrangement of atoms in space
Why is a double bond planar?
The c=c bond and all atoms attached lie in the same plane
What is the bond angle in the planar unit?
120 degrees
What does the double C=C bond cause?
Restricted rotation of atoms
What type of stereoisomerism does the restricted rotation cause?
E/Z isomerism
What is an E-isomer?
The matching groups are across the double bond
What is a Z-isomer?
The matching groups are on the same side of the double bond (Zame Zide)
What are the Cahn-ingold-prelog priority rules?
1) assign a priority to the two atoms attached to each side of the double bond - look at the atoms bonded directly to each of the C=C atoms
2) Atoms with the highest atomic number on each carbon is given the highest priority
3) If atoms bonded directly to each carbon are the same, then you look at the next atom in the groups to work out which has the higher priority
4) determine if E or Z
