What is amenorrhea?
Absence of menstruation
What is primary amenorrhea?
Failure to establish menstruation by 16 years
What is secondary amenorrhea?
Cessation of previously normal menstruation for >/= 6 months
What is oligomenorrhea?
Infrequent menstruation
>35 days
What is menorrhagia?
Heavy menstrual bleeding
>80mls per menstruation
What is dysmenorrhoea?
Pain during menses
What is dysfunctional uterine bleeding?
Heavy and irregular menstrual bleeding secondary to anovulation
What premenstrual syndrome?
A cyclical disorder occurring in later half of cycle with physical or psychological symptoms
What can commonly cause a disorder of menstruation?
Hormones Chromosomal anomalies Structural abnormalities Drugs Thyroid disease
What are physiological causes of amenorrhea?
Prepubertal
Pregnancy
Menopause
What are pathological causes of amenorrhea?
Endocrine pathology
Imperforate hymen
Congenital abnormalities
What are common causes of menorrhagia?
Uterine fibroids - leiomyoma Uterine polyps Endometrial cancer Bleeding diathesis Copper IUD Drugs - warfarin
What is endometriosis?
Endometrium grows on ovaries + fallopian tubes
