End of menstruation - no periods for 12 consecutive months
What is early menopause?
Menopause that occurs under 45
What is physiological menopause?
Normal decline in ovarian function due to aging
Occurs 45-55
What is pathological menopause?
Gradual or abrupt cessation of menstruation before 40
What are the phases of menopause?
Pre-menopause
Peri-menopause
Menopause
Post-menopause
What is pre-menopause?
Time prior to menopause
What happens during pre-menopause?
Follicular stage shortens
Less oestrogen secreted
LH + FSh levels rise
Reduced fertility
What is peri-menopause?
Phase characterized by physiological changed associated with the end of reproduction capacity
What is the menopause phase?
Permanent cessation of menstruation caused by ovarian follicular development failure
What is the post-menopausal phase?
Time after a woman has had 12 months of amenorrhea
What causes menopause?
When the ovaries are depleted of follicles and do not respond to gonadotrophins
What happens to the gonadotrophins during menopause?
LH rises
FSH rises - dramatically
What are the symptoms of menopause?
Hot flushes
Sweating
Insomnia
Psychological symptoms
What causes the menopause symptoms?
Oestrogen deficiency
What is dysfunctional uterine bleeding?
Spotting between cycles or extremely heavy bleeding
