Meningeal Layers, Dural Folds And Venous Sinuses Flashcards
What are the three membranous layers that surround and protect the brain?
Meninges:
Pia
Arachnoid
Dura
What is the pia?
Microscopically thin
Delicate
Closely adhered to surface of the brain
What is the arachnoid?
Soft translucent membrane
What is the Dura?
Tough fibrous membrane
What are the two layers of the dura?
Periosteal- lines inner bone of skull meningeal- layer adjacent to arachnoid
What are areas of separation of the dura called and what do they make
Dural folds
And they create dural venous sinuses
What do dural folds do?
Stabalise the brain and act as rigid dividers
What is herniation?
Ribs in skull pressure causes compression against dural folds and through foramen magnum
What is a dural venous sinus?
Venous blood filled spaces created by dural folds
Where does blood come from to enter the dural sinuses?
Cerebral veins
Where do venous sinuses drain into?
Internal jugular vein
What is intracranial haemorrhage?
Bleeding in the spaces between meningeal layers
Where does blood accumulate in an intracranial haemorrhage?
Extradural
Subdural
Subarachnoid
What is an intracerebral haemorrhage?
Bleed in the brain tissue
What does a brain bleed cause?
Increased volume
Increased pressure
Damage
