Q

MSM -Atkinson and Shifrin (1968)

Stages of MSM

A

Environmental stimuli

If attention is paid on sensory store… Data transferred to STM

At STM if maintainence reharsal occurs (repetition maintly Verbal) info is transferred into the LTM
If maintainence reharsal does not occur info will be displaced at the STM which more incoming info due to STM’s short capicity

At the LTM, it is prentially unlimited in duration and capacity

Retrieval is the process of getting info from LTM back to STM (then info is available for use)

Q

Evaluation-

+case studies

Scovile 1957 =HM … Hippocampus removed to reduce epilepsy
What did this result in

A

Personality and intellect stayed the same and could recall prior to surgery howeve could not form new LTMs

Q

Evaluation-
+supporting evidence

What did studies using brain scanning techniques show in the case of Beardsly (1997) and Squire et al (1992)

What case study was squire et al. Finding further supported by?

A

Beardsly (1997) found prefrontal corte scrive during STM but not LTM tasks

Squire et al (1992) found hippocampus active when LTM is engaged
↪️HM >Hipocampus removed > could not form new LTM’s

Q

Limitation of MSM

Too simple

Msm suggest STM & LTM are singular

What does research suggest?

What doesn’t maintainence reharsal explain?

A

Working memory (STM) and LTM is actually divided into a number of qualitatively different stores

Long term episodic memories
