Attachement-Aunsworth Strange Situations-types Of Attchemtent Flashcards
Ainsworth (1971, 1978) = strange situation
Aim- to see how many infants aged between 9 and 18 months behaved under conditions of mild stress and novelty
Procedure-
How many infant observed?
How big was the research room?
How was it marked off?
How many episodes did the procedure consist of?
Key feature of the episode?
What did this allow observation of? (4 things)
How was data collected?
How often was indie recorded using behavioural categories?
106 middle class infants
9x9 foot space
Into 16 squares
8
Caregiver and stranger alternatively stay with the infant or leave
- separation anxiety
- reunion behaviour
- stranger anxiety
- level of exploration in novel environment
Group of observers using a video recorder a one-way mirror
Every 15 seconds
Findings of Ainsworths study
She discovered main patterns of behaviours in the infants observed (3 consistent clusters)
Secure attachment?
-moderate strange anxiety, easy to soothe separation anxiety and enthusiastic upon reunion
66% were found to be SA
Insecure avoidant?
-low stranger anxiety, indifferent separation anxiety, avoids contact upon reunion
22% were found to be IA
Insecure resistant?
-high stranger anxiety, distressed separation anxiety, seeks and rejects upon reunion
12% were found to be IR
SA-strong and contented attachment to caregiver due to sensitive responsiveness. Comfortable with social interaction and intimacy = healthy subsequent cognitive and emotional development
IA-children who tend to avoid social interaction and intimacy with others
IR-both seek and reject intimacy and social interaction
Evaluation-
Other types of attachment
What did Main and Soloman (1986) discover when re-watching 200 strange situation tapes?
Van Ijzendooen meta analysis of 80 US studies
Proposed a new attachment type “insecure-disorganised” =lack of consistent patterns of social behaviour
Found 62% SA, 15% IA, 9% IR, 15% ID
Evaluation-observation had high reliability
Ainsworths study had high inter-observer reliability
What was the agreement rate in 1978 on exploratory behaviour?
0.94 👌🏾
Evaluation- real world application
