meiosis Flashcards
Describe both asexual and sexual reproduction
provide examples
- asexual: The parent organism replicates its genetic material and divides, producing offspring that are clones/identical of itself. There is no fusion of gametes (ex: starfish, hydra)
- sexual: Sexual reproduction involves two parents, and offspring are produced by the combination of their genetic material through the fusion of gametes (providing a different combination of genes) (ex: animals, plants, fungi)
Example of diploid cells
blood, skin, lung cells
Example of haploid cells
egg, sperm, pollen
How does the life cycle occur?
meiosis -> fertilization -> mitosis
How many times does meiosis divide
2
2n
add more details
2x the number of chromosomes in a diploid cell
n
represents the haploid number of chromosomes
(number of chromosomes in a haploid cell)
How many chromosomes does a zygote have?
46
Organisms that reproduce sexually have special somatic cells known as __?
primary sex cells
the diploid number in humans is
46 or 2n
the haploid number in humans is
23 or n
What is a germ cell
Specialized somatic cells that will produce gametes
a cell that undergoes meiosis to produce gametes
Stem cells
Cells with no particular function that will develop a function (ex: embryonic stem cells)
Zygote
what does it get? what is it? 2n or n?
a fertilized egg = 2n (half of chromosomes from math, half from dad)
