Blood + more TEST Flashcards
Heterozygous
- hybrid (2 of the different)
- Bb
Homozygous
- purebred (2 of the same)
- BB or bb
What type of blood cell determines blood type?
red blood cells
What are antigens and antibodies?
- Antigens: A person’s blood type is based upon the presence or absence of two proteins a (a and b) on the surface of the red blood cells. these proteins are called antigens.
- in other words, antigens are a substance that triggers an immune response in the body, causing it to produce antibodies
- Antibodies: proteins that detect foreign substances in the body and attack them.
- ex: Person has A blood type. Is administered type B blood. Antibodies will attack.
What is the law of dominance?
- when two different alleles occur together and one prevents the other from having an effect (seen in the phenotype)
- Rr
What is the law of segregation?
- During meiosis, the two alleles for each trait separate so that each gamete receives only one allele from each pair
- Rr -> R and r
MEANING THAT EACH GAMETE ONLY RECEIBES ONE ALLELE
What are the different types of genotypes for each blood type?
- Type A (AA or AO) or I^A
- Type B (BB or BO) or I^B
- Type AB (AB) or I^A & I^B
- Type O (OO) or ii
Who can receive from who?
- A: can receive from A and O
- B: can receive from B and O
- AB: can receive from A, B, O, and AB
- O: can receive from O
Who can donate to?
- A: can donate to A and AB
- B: can donate to B and AB
- AB: can donate to AB
- O: can donate to A, B, AB, O
Multiple alleles
its in the name u ho
traits that have more than two possible alleles, thus more variation in phenotypes
Codominance
The heterozygous (Rr) genotype shows a combination of both phenotype
A person’s blood type is based upon the presence or absence of two __ (__and__) on the surface of the red blood cells. these proteins are known as __. Because two _ are involved, there are __ possible combinations or blood types.
proteins, A, B, antigens, antigens, four (4)
