What is an inclusive environment?
An environment which recognises and accommodates differences in the way people use the built environment.
What is some primary legislation that is relevant for inclusive environments?
- Equality Act 2010
- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- Planning and Building Acts
- Building Safety and Fire Safety Acts
What is some secondary legislation in relation to inclusive environments?
- National Planning Policy Framework
- Building Regulations
- Fire Safety Regulations
What is the difference between primary and secondary legislation?
- Primary are the main legislation, which are the Acts
- Secondary are the regulations which sit beneath the Acts
What is the purpose of the building safety and fire safety acts 2022/23?
This was legislation introduced after the Grenfell Tower disaster with the intention of getting responsible people to take responsibility for the design and specification of buildings.
Which part of the building regulations is in relation to access and use of building?
Part M
Volume 1 relates to dwellings
Volume 2 relates to buildings other than dwellings
What is BS8300?
British Standards for disabled access design.
What do you understand by diversity?
The differences between people
Do you know what the three main types of groups are within diversity?
- Legislated groups
- Other non legislated groups
- Everyone
What do you understand by neurodiversity?
I understand that people have different conditions within their genetic makeup and how they affect people.
Examples like ADHD, Asperger’s, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia

What is unconscious bias?
This is where social stereotypes about certain groups of people are formed outside your own conscious awareness.
What is direct discrimination?
Treating someone with a protected characteristic less favourably than others.
What is indirect discrimination?
Putting rules or arrangements in place that apply to everyone, but that put someone with a protected characteristic at an unfair disadvantage.
