Maternal Vocab. Flashcards
A termination of pregnancy, either natural (spontaneous) or artificial (induced)
Abortion
a substance (fetal antigen) that is present in a pregnant woman’s blood; test for AFP are used to determine pregnancy. AFP in amniotic fluid can be diagnostic of inborn errors of metabolism or fetal structural anomalies, neural tub defects.
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
Absence or suppression of menstrual flow
Amenorrhea
Inner membrane of 2 fetal membranes that form the stupid auto correct and contains the fetus and amniotic fluid
Amnion
Procedure in which amniotic fluid is obtained
Amniocentesis
infusion of room temp isotonic fluid into the uterine cavity to increase fluid around the cord and prevent compression during uterine contractions.
Aminoinfusion
The protective layer inside the mother that the fetus is held in during pregnancy
Amniotic sac
Fluid surrounding the fetus derived primarily of maternal serum and fetal urine. Normal amount of AF is 10 cm or greater
Amniotic fluid
Artificial rupture of membranes (AROM) to promote labor
Amniotomy
Period occurring before birth
Antenatal/Antepartum
Bacterial infection of the vagina, fishy odor, thin white or clear discharge
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
NST plus an ultrasound that permits detailed physical and physiological characteristics of the fetus to determine fetal wellbeing
Biophysical Profile (BPP)
where the baby is naturally born; consisting of the vagina and the lower part of the uterus
Birth Canal
Any practice of preventing pregnancy
Birth Control
The process of feeding an infant from a mothers breast; pure breastfeeding (no other foods) is recommended for infants 0-6 months
Breastfeeding
A surgical procedure used to deliver babies when a natural birth is impractical or potentially dangerous to the mother or infant
Caesarean Section (C-SECTION)
The opening in the cervix into the uterus
Cervical OS
Elongated tube structure in the bottom part of the uterus
Cervix
Fetal membrane closest to the intrauterine wall
Chorion
Any kind of birth control that specifically applies to preventing pregnancy in the face of sexual intercourse
Contraception
A stage of giving birth when the fetus head is visible; this occurs immediately before the fetus is born
Crowning
The process through which the DR, nurse, and/or Midwife helps birth the baby
Delivery
Pain right before or during menstruation
Dysmenorrhea
A pregnancy that occurs somewhere other than the uterus, that can cause serious har to the mother if left untreated
Ectopic Pregnancy
Expected date of delivery; expected date of birth; estimated date of confinement; when the birth of the infant is expected
EDD, EDB, EDC
A condition that occurs when the endometrium is found outside the uterus; can lead to pain and heaving bleeding
Endometriosis
The layer that lines the uterus; it is made of mucus and fills with blood and nutrients during the menstrual cycle; its shedding leads to the menstrual period.
Endometrium
A cut made in the mothers perineum (the section between her vagina and anus) that allows the baby to be born with minimal complications.
Episiotomy
Determination that the fetus is growing appropriately physically and physiologically
fetal-well being
An unborn baby that is still developing in the mothers body
Fetus
Fetal Heart Rate
FHR
Fetal Movement
FM
the top of the uterus; the height measurement helps assess the growth and development of the fetus and how many weeks it has been growing
Fundus
Length of pregnancy; usually 40 weeks in humans
Gestation
A woman who is pregnant
Gravida
Pregnancy
Gravidity
A DR specializing in women’s health
Gynecologist
Abnormal condition of pregnancy characterized by excessive vomiting
Hyperemesis Gravidarum
A surgical procedure used to remove all or part of the uterus
Hysterectomy
A newborn from 1 month to 12 months of age
Infant
An inability to get pregnant and maintain the fetus to birth
Infertility
Period during delivery
Intrapartum
The process of birthing the fetus; cervical change with regular contractions
Labor
Last menstrual period; this date is asked of the mother and helps determine when she became pregnant, so an expected date of delivery can be determined.
LMP
A medical exam of the breast
Mammogram
A surgical procedure to remove part or all of the breasts; can be done to prevent a disease (such as breast cancer) or after such a disease is developed.
Mastectomy
The period in a woman’s life when the menstrual period ceases and her body undergoes various hormonal changes. Must be at least 12 months with no bleeding
Menopause
The cycle of menstruation, shedding of the uterine lining, and reformation of the uterine lining
Menstrual Cycle
