Mary 1st Government Flashcards
How was Mary greeted with by the English public
Very happy to have her, over the course of Edwards reign, N’land and Somerset had made themselves quite unpopular. People saw Mary as the rightful heir
what did Mary mistake her support for?
support for the re-instatement of Catholicism
Details of Mary’s coronation
very grand, big coronation procession including much of higher society (knights, nobles, councillors, soldiers, heralds ect.)
Important figures in Mary’s coronation parade and what it meant
Bishop Gardiner- catholic
Elizabeth and Anne of Cleeves- two potential, protestant rallying figures. Their inclusion in this parade implies their support for Mary and prevents them become rebel figures.
Religious problems in Mary’s government
Inherited a kingdom with religious divisions and a religious crisis at a parish level
Catholic ruler of a kingdom with a substantial protestant minority.
Since the past 2 rulers had been protestant all their advisors were protestant so Mary’s favoured catholic advisors had little political knowledge.
Why did Mary make councillors
It is widely considered Mary made councillors to appease people which led to a very big and divided council.
why did Mary’s upbringing effect her council
Mary was not raised to ruler- she had little schooling in politics and lacked the political instinct that her forebears would of had, since the past 2 rulers had been protestant all their advisors were protestant so Mary’s favoured catholic advisors had little political knowledge
Mary (at the time of her coronation) was a unmarried, older woman
what caused division in Mary’s council
Religious reasons- council divided into a catholic side and a moderate side and while Mary would support catholicism, the moderate side had been councillors before so they had much more experience BUT were more protestant inclined.
To cope with such a big council, Mary created an inner council in which decisions were made, the outer council was then informed of these BUT had no say in them- divisions.
A key member of the inner council was Spanish which, naturally, upset the English
Bishop Gardiner
Her fathers secretary
strong believer of catholicism but Mary never really trusted him since he had failed to support her mother
Privy council
Mary stopped using them, too big, not very effective
Sir William Paget
one of Edwards most conservative advisors
But, Mary lost faith in him when her opposed her religious program
Simon Renard
An advisor from Spain who Mary trusted implicitly, headed the inner council
Cardinal Pole
shared Mary’s devotion to the catholic church and was made Archbishop but he would separate himself from secular issues- Pope didn’t like him
Marquis of Wincester

Has exchequer duties and was Lord privy seal
