What is an alloy?
A man made mixture of different metals.
What is a metal?
a naturally occurring element.
What is steel?
Steel is an alloy. It is a mixture of Iron and Carbon.
What is aluminum?
An alloy. Bauxite ore, mixed with silica and iron oxide.
What is the ore of a metal?
The part which is mined from the ground.
What is stainless steel?
(Non-rusting steel). Key ingredient is chrome, which forms a protective layer on the surface of the alloy.
What is the difference between hard wood and soft wood?
Deciduous (hard) vs coniferous (soft). There is a difference in the types of seeds that fall from a tree. If a seed has covering (fruit or shell) it is a hard wood. If a seed has no covering (like a pine cone) it is a soft wood. There is also the difference of needles vs leaves. In general, hard woods are more durable and soft woods tend to grow faster, longer, and straighter.

Commonly used hardwood that is considered very tough?
Hickory, maple
Janka hardness test

Does all wood float?
No, but most does.
What is the best wood for tool handles and why?
Hickory, because of its strength and ability to absorb shock.
Benefits of soft woods

What is a casement window?
A window that opens from the side like a door. It has door hinges on the side.
What are telephone poles and railroad ties coated in and why?
Creosote. Its a tar that preserves the life of the wood. Protects against weather and termites.
How is pressure treated wood made?
It is put into a pressurized tube that has chemical pumped into it.
What type of wood is typically pressure treated?
Softwood. Typically pine or cedar.
What is glass?
Melted sand. Silica turns to glass after being put into a kiln.
