Male Reproduction Flashcards
Testes
Produce sperm and testosterone, house sperm
Penis
Delivery method of sperm to women, holds urethra
Prostate
Its secretion is a milky fluid that plays a role in activating sperm
Epididymis
Provides temporary storage site for immature sperm cells that enter it from the testes
Seminal Vesicles
Produce seminal fluid
- fluid volume of semen
- thick, yellowish fluid
- fructose, prostaglandins, vitamin C
Ductus/Vas Deferens
Pathway for sperm from epididymis to urethra
Bulbourethral glands
Clear mucus that drains into the penile urethra
- Cleans urethra of acidic urine
- Lubricates during sex
Sperm - Head
- Contains DNA
- Covered in acrosome, which breaks down and releases enzymes that help sperm penetrate egg
Sperm - Midpiece
Wrapped in mitochondria which provide the ATP needed for the tail’s whipping action
Sperm - Tail
Propels the sperm along its way in the female reproductive tract (with help of midpiece’s mitochondria)
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Stimulates seminiferous tubules to produce sperm
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Stimulates interstitial cells to produce testosterone
- Growth spurts, inc. reproductive organs
- Causes secondary sex characteristics to appear
