Male genital system-Week 8, Anatomy Flashcards
How many layers of muscle does scrotum have? List them.
- 2
- Dartos muscle: Wrinkles the scrotum when cold
- Cremaster muscle: Pulls the testis up when cold. They keep the testis near the abdomen or away from the abdomen depending on the temperature.
What is the function of testicular vessels in scrotum?
-Artery brings warm blood to the testis.
Vein takes warm blood away from the testis
What are the factors affecting temperature regulation of testis?
- 2 muscles
- Testicular vessels
- Scrotum is rich in sweat glands(effective cooling)
- Scrotal skin has no fat( no insulation)
List the blood supply if male genital organs.
- Testicular artery
- Pampiniform plexus of the veins
- Left testicular vein
- Right testicular vein
Testicular artery
From abdominal aorta
Pampiniform plexus of veins
Forms the testicular vein
Left testicular vein
Ends in the left renal vein
Right testicular vein
ends in the inferior vena cava
What is a varicocele?
Varicose veins inside the scrotum dilated torturously. —Dilatation and varicosity of the pampiniform venous plexus.
-Most common on the left side.
What is the danger of varicocele?
It increases the temperature which causes infertility.
What are the 2 types of lymph drainage?
- Testis: drains to the para-aortic lymph node.
- Scrotum: drains to the superficial inguinal lymph nodes.
What is the hormonal control of the testis?
-LH stimulate Leydig cells to secrete testosterone.
-Testosterone, stimulates spermatogenesis.
-FSH, initiation of spermatogenesis, it increases the production of the sperms by preventing degeneration of spermatogonia.
Inhibin, inhibits overproduction of the sperms.
What are the 5 substances that Sertoli cells secrete?
- Testicular fluid, for nutrition
- Substances to initiate meiosis
- Androgen- binding protein, concentrates testosterone around developing sperms.
- Inhibin hormone, inhibits the release of FSH to prevent overproduction of sperms.
- Mullerian inhibiting hormone, inhibits the development of the female genital duct.
List the sexual development of the testis.
- Testicular enlargement, 1st physical manifestation of puberty.
- Seminiferous tubules, remains uncanalised till puberty.
- Canalization occurs at puberty.
How long are sperms stored in the epididymis?
3-4 weeks then die if ejaculated doesn’t occur.
