Macrophages-specific Findings. Flashcards
Gaucher Disease, what is the appearance of macrophages?
Gaucher cells are basically lipid-laden macrophages resembling crumpled tissue paper.
Neimann-pick disease?
Foam cells which are actually lipid-laden macrophages.
Which part of LN contains macrophages?
Medulla.
Where are macrophages found in spleen?
The marginal zone in between red pulp and white pulp.
What is the main cell surface protein for macrophages?
CD 14
Which pathogen can survive in macrophages in reticuloendothelial system?
Brucella
In which disease, the macrophages are filled with the causative organisms?
Histoplasmosis
How do you diagnose Leshmenia spp?
Macrophages containing amastigotes
What is the relation of acute phase reactants with macrophages?
Hepcidin increases because of iron sequestration by macrophages.
Transferrin decreased because it is internalized my macrophages to sequester iron.
What post-infarction complication occurs die to macrophages?
Interventricular septal rupture.
Pulmonary edema?
Hemosiderin-laden macrophages/HF cells seen in lungs.
Also seen in the setting of alveolar hemorrhage
Rheumatic Fever on heart biopsy?
Anitschkow cells (enlarged macrophages with ovoid, rod-like wavy nucleus)
Whipple’s disease?
PAS+ macrophages in lamina propria.
Immune Thrombocytopenia mechanism of disease?
Splenic macrophages phagocytose platelets.
Burkitt Lymphoma’s appearance under microscope?
Sheets of lymphocytes with interspersed “tangible body” macrophages
Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis?
Bone Marrow Biopsy will show macrophages phagocytosing bone marrow elements.
What is the origin of macrophages?
Mesoderm
microglial cells are also of mesodermal origin
When are macrophages seen in ischemic brain disease/stroke biopsy?
3-5 days after the event.
Chronic Pyelonephritis’ subtype xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis on biopsy?
Macroscopically, orange nodules are seen.
Microscopically, foamy macrophages are seen with widespread kidney damage.
Breast Milk contains which two types of immunity cells?
Macrophages and Lymphocytes
Sarcoidosis and Macrophages story?
Sarcoidosis causes Hypercalcemia, and increased ACE levels due to INCREASED 1-alpha hydroxylase-mediated Vitamin D activation in macrophages.
Macrophages laden with carbon in which disease?
Pneumoconiosis
Silicosis ka pathogenesis?
Macrophages upon exposure to silica release fibrogenic factors leading to fibrosis.
Silica also disrupts phagolysosomes and impairs macrophage function making it more susceptible to TB.
