M3H Male Organs Flashcards
Where do the testes develop before descending into the scrotum?
In the abdomen at about the level of the kidneys
What is the function of the scrotum?
It encloses the testes and provides a lower temperature necessary for sperm maturation.
What is the perineum in males?
The region between the anus and the scrotum, analogous to the female perineal region
What structures inside the testes produce sperm?
Seminiferous tubules.
What is the function of interstitial cells in the testes?
They produce testosterone.
What is the epididymis, and what does it do?
coiled tube at the upper part of each testis where sperm mature and are temporarily stored.
What is the purpose of the seminal vesicles?
They secrete a thick, sugary fluid that nourishes sperm and forms part of semen.
What is the role of the prostate gland?
It secretes a milky fluid that nourishes sperm and helps them survive in the vagina.
What is the function of the bulbourethral glands?
They secrete fluid into the urethra during ejaculation.
How does the urethra function in the male reproductive system?
It carries semen and urine out of the body through the penis.
What is the glans penis?
The soft, sensitive tip of the penis.
What is the prepuce (foreskin)?
A fold of skin covering the glans penis, which can be removed in circumcision.
Where are the interstitial cells located in the testes?
Adjacent to the seminiferous tubules.
Where does the vas deferens travel?
It runs from the epididymis, up into the pelvic region, near the bladder
Where are the seminal vesicles located?
At the base of the bladder, merging with the vas deferens to form the ejaculatory duct.
What is the function of the vas deferens?
Carries sperm from the epididymis toward
the urethra
