ovaries
pair of small, almond-shaped organs in the pelvis
contain ovarian follicles that hold ova.
during ovulation, an ovum is released
the ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which secretes estrogen and progesterone.
fallopian tubes
tubes on either side of the uterus, leading from each ovary
the finger-like ends are called fimbriae, which catch the egg after its release.
cilia move the ovum toward the uterus for potential fertilization.
uterus
fibromuscular organ between the urinary bladder and rectum
fundus: rounded upper portion
corpus: larger central section
endometrium: inner layer of specialized epithelial mucosa
myometrium: middle muscular layer
perimetrium (uterine serosa): outer membranous tissue layer
cervix
narrow, lower portion of the uterus
vagina
3-inch-long muscular, mucosa-lined canal extending from the cervix to the outside of the body
Bartholin Glands
two small glands on either side of the vaginal orifice
secrete a mucous secretion that lubricates the vagina
clitoris
organ of sensitive, erectile tissue located anterior to the vaginal orifice and in front of the urethral orifice
vulva
external genitalia: labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, and Bartholin glands
Perineum
region between the vaginal orifice and anus
hymen
thin membrane partially covering the entrance to the vagina
breasts
Composed of mammary glands that develop in response to hormones from the ovaries during puberty
Contains lactiferous (milk carrying) ducts and sinuses to carry milk to the nipple (mammary papilla)
The dark pigmented area around the nipple is the areola.
