Criteria for effective chemoprophylaxis
- Drug must be effective
- Host have well defined increased risk of disease
- drug safety outweigh risk
- Drug must have adequate tissue conc. present at the time of exposure
Chemoprophylaxis against infectious disease
- TB
- Lepto
- Rabies
- Neisseria meningitis
- Rheuma heart disease
DISEASEA TARGETED PROPHYLAXIS (G2K)
- Rheumatic fever
- Endocarditis
- Malaria
- Cholera
- Plague
- Influenza
- Leptospirosis
During surgical prophylaxis give antibiotics __ hour prior to surger

Rheumatic fever primary preventions
- Treat streptococcal pharyngitis
- Oral Penicillin V for 10 days
- Oral Erythromycin for 10 days (if allergic)
Rheumatic fever secondary preventions
- Oral Penicillin V 250 BID
- Erythromycin 250 BID
- Benzathine Penicillin 1.2 M.U IM every 21 days.
Standard oral regimen for endocarditis prophylaxis in adults with high risk cardiac lesions
Amoxicillin 2 gm by mouth 1 hour prior to
procedure
Penicillin allergy for endocarditis prophylaxis in adults with high risk cardiac lesions
a. Clarithromycin, Azithromycin 500 mg
(1 hour prior to procedure)
b. Cefalexin 2 gm (1 hour prior )
c. Clindamycin 600 mg (1 hour prior)
LATENT INFECTION TREATMENT for tuberculosis
- INH 300 mg daily x 9 months or
- INH + Rifampicin daily for 6 months or
- Rifampicin for 4 months or
- Rifampicin + Pyrazinamide for 2 months
2 drug regimen for low risk HIV
- Zidovudine
2. Lamivudine
3 drug regimen for low risk HIV
- Zidovudine
- Lamivudine
- Indinavir
