Low Visibility Operations Flashcards
Minimum RVR for T/O? (and for FO?)
125m (550m)
How many lights can you see at line up to replace initial RVR?
6 centreline lights (15m spacing)
CAT I DH and RVR?
200ft
550/125/75 (only TDZ required)
CAT I visual references required?
Elements of approach lighting system or touchdown zone markings
CAT I LTS DH and RVR?
200ft (same as CAT I)
450/125/75 (only TDZ required)
(400/125/75 for ILS II/III) (only TDZ required)
CAT I LTS visual references required?
3 consecutive lights and lateral element
CAT II DH and RVR?
100ft
300/125/75
CAT II required visual references?
3 consecutive lights and lateral element
CAT III A DH and RVR?
<100ft (not below 50ft)
200/125/75
CAT III A required visual references?
3 consecutive lights
CAT III B fail operational DH and RVR?
<50ft (or NO DH)
75/75/75
What can the minimum RVR required in the midpoint be reduced from and to if using a Rollout Guidance or Control System?
From 125m to 75m
What defines a “relevant” RVR?
The section of the runway required for the aircraft to slow to approximately 60 knots
What are the reasons to go-around below 1000ft on an autoland?
Loss of AP Engine failure Autoland light Single chime (amber caution) Triple click (downgrade)
What are the reasons to go-around below 100ft on an autoland?
Red autoland light (active below 200ft)
What are the 7 causes of the red autoland light illuminating? (When does this light become active?)
Both APs lost LOC 1/4 dot deviation, above 15ft RA Loss of LOC above 15ft RA GLIDE 1 dot deviation, above 100ft RA Loss of GLIDE above 100ft RA Difference between both RAs of over 15ft Long flare Early/untimely flare
(Active below 200ft)
How many approaches can be attempted?
2 consecutively subject to significant weather improvement
When do the centreline lights go red and white alternating?
900m from end
When do centreline lights go red?
300m from end
What is the difference between fail operational and fail passive?
Fail operational means the approach, flare and landing can still be completed automatically in the event of a failure below alert height.
Fail passive is when, with a failure, there is no significant out of trim condition or deviation to flight path, but the landing cannot be completed automatically.
When is the latest ATC will initiate LVPs by?
Ceiling <200ft or RVR <600m
What distance must a take off alternate be within?
320nm
What distance must an adequate aerodrome along the route be within?
380nm (A319)
400nm (A320)
What is the approach ban?
1000ft
RVR must be above minimum required for approach to continue past 1000ft, if it reduces below 1000ft you may continue
Is ATHR required to be used on an auto land?
Yes, but for Cat 3A and Cat 3B auto lands only
ATHR inop in MEL puts the aircraft into Cat 2 only
