Long Bone Fractures 3 Flashcards
How do you treat a femoral fracture in a neonatal calf and why?
Stack pinning + cerlage wire b/c calves don’t have a robust cortical bone as foals do
Which bone fracture is unlikely to heal with stall rest?
Femoral fracture
ESF w/pins in one plane
Type 1
ESF w/pins placed laterally to medially
Type 2
ESF w/cranially to caudally directed half-pins
Type 3
What forces do IM pins NOT protect the fracture site against?
Axial and compression forces
Diverging pins increases stability of this type of ESF
Type 2
Tubing w/PMMA and external frames are not strong enough for open fractures in these patients
Heavier patients
Why might you get sequestration assoc. w/pin tracts?
Disrupted blood supply and the heat of drilling
What is the success rate for stacked pin fixation in neonatal calf femoral fractures?
75%
What are stacked pin fixation complications?
Seroma, pin migration, osteoyelitis
Double plate application on cranial and lateral aspects of the bone results in a 50% success rate of this fracture
Femoral fracture in foals
What is the prognosis of a femoral fracture in the adult large animal?
Poor
Are closed or open fractures more likely to remain uninfected?
Closed (4x more likely)
What are clinical signs of infection?
Lameness, heat, fever
