Long Bi/Urine Retention Flashcards
Long Bi
What is Urine Retention?
Urine Retention is a disorder that manifests as difficulty in urination, painful distension in the lower abdomen, and even a blockage of urine.
What is the condition of slow onset, difficult urination, and scanty dribbling urine called?
The condition is called Long.
What is the condition of sudden onset and complete blockage of urine called?
The condition is called Bi.
What does Western medicine attribute Urine Retention to?
Western medicine attributes it to disorders of the urinary bladder and urethra, and diseases of the prostate gland, such as hyperplasia of the prostate.
Where is Longbi located?
Longbi is located in the urinary bladder and is closely related to the lung, spleen, kidney, and liver.
What is the basic pathological change associated with Longbi?
The basic pathological change is dysfunction of qi transformation of the urinary bladder.
What are the excessive patterns related to Longbi?
Damp-heat in the bladder
Exuberance of lung-heat
Liver-qi stagnation
Trauma (urethral blockage)
How to differentiate Long Bi + Stranguria?
Both have pain + difficulty urination
Long Bi-
Pain in the lower abdomen, relieved by urinating
Stranguria-
pain in the urethra when discharging urine
Inflammation
What are the deficiency patterns related to Longbi?
Deficiency patterns include
Spleen qi-deficiency or sinking
kidney-qi (yang) deficiency
The following are S/sx of Excess patterns of Urine Retention due to ___________.
Acute urinary retention with severe pain in the lower abdomen, scanty hot urine, dripping urine or retention of urine accompanied by fullness and distension of the lower abdomen, bitter taste in the mouth, thirst without desire to drink, difficult bowel movements
T: red w/yellow, sticky coating
P: Rapid + Slippery
Damp-Heat in Bladder
The following are S/sx of Excess patterns of Urine Retention due to ___________.
Acute urinary retention with severe pain in the lower abdomen, scanty hot urine, dripping urine or retention of urine accompanied by fever, SOB, dry throat, cough, chest distension
T: Red w/ yellow coating
P: Rapid
Excessive Heat in Lungs
The following are S/sx of Excess patterns of Urine Retention due to ___________.
Acute urinary retention with severe pain in the lower abdomen, severe distension of the lower abdomen, bitter taste in the mouth, restlessness, irritability, distension, frequent sighing and fullness in the hypochondriac region
T: Normal or Red w/ yellow (heat)
P: Wiry
LR Qi Stagnation (with or without Heat)
The following are S/sx of Excess patterns of Urine Retention due to ___________.
History of traumatic injury or surgery of the lower abdomen accompanied by fullness and pain in the lower abdomen
T: Purple
P: Choppy
Traumatic Injury
The following are S/sx of Deficiency patterns of Urine Retention due to ___________.
Chronic onset w/ dribbling of urine and weak urination, accompanied by SOB, poor
appetite, loose stools, a sensation of fullness in the lower abdomen
T: Pale + puffy
P: tWeak + Thready

What are the main points to treat Excessive Patterns of Long Bi?
BL-54: Regulates function of BL + benefits lumbar
SP-9 + SP-6: Helps w/ water passages
REN-3 + BL-28: Front-mu + Back-shu of BL
Damp-Heat:
BL-39
Lung Heat:
LU-5 + LI-11
LR Qi Stagnation:
LR-3 + LR-1
Blood Stasis-
REN-2 (will help REN-3) + BL-32 + SP-10
What are the main points in treating Deficient patterns of Long Bi?
BL-54: Regulates function of BL + benefits lumbar
REN-4
BL-20
BL-22
BL-23
DU-4 + REN-6 (if severe): moxa
SP Yang Xu:
REN-6 + ST-36
KI Yang Xu:
KI-3 + KI-7 + REN-4
What is the difference between Long Bi + Stranguria
Long Bi:
Frequency of urine- scanty or
Volume- less than normal
Pain- no pain but possible distension/fullness in lower abdomen
Stranguria:
Frequency of urine- more than 10x/day
Volume- normal
Pain- pain + urgency, possible referred pain to lumbar + inflammation
