Hypochondriac Pain Flashcards
What does hypochondriac refer to?
Hypochondriac refers to the lateral costal region, the area from the armpit to the 12th rib.
What causes hypochondriac pain?
Failure of the LR or GB dispersing the free flow of Qi and malnutrition of meridian.
Hypochondria pain is characterized as a painful sensation on _____ or _____ sides of the hypochondriac region
One or Both
The following are dx under ____________.
Hepatocirrohosis, hepatocarcinoma, cholecystitis, hepatitis, intercoastal neuralgia
Western Med
What are the characteristics of pain in the diagnosis?
Mainly unilateral or bilateral hypochondriac pain, which can be stabbing, distending, dull, or wandering.
What symptoms accompany the pain?
Symptoms include restlessness, irritability, loss of appetite, nausea, belching, abdominal distension, and chest tightness (LU + HT Qi are affected by free flow of Qi).
What is often present in the patient’s history?
There is usually a history of emotional distress, improper diet, or external invasion of pathogens.
What quality of pain can be present in hypochondria pain?
Stabbing
Distending
Dull
Wandering
What are the etiologies and pathogenesis of Hypochondriac pain?
Emotional disturbance –> LR failure of free flow of Qi –> obstructing meridian
Improper Diet –> produces Dampness-Heat or Dampness-Phlegm (GB) –> obstruction of meridian
External contraction of Damp-Heat–> obstruction of meridian
Chronic Disease or Overstrain –> Xu of LR Yin + Blood –> malnutrition of meridian –> causing pain
The following are patterns of _____?
LR Qi Stagnation
Blood Stasis
Damp-Heat Accumulation
LR Yin Xu
Hypochondriac Pain

Chief S/sx of pain in the hypochondria region that comes + goes w/
distending + wandering pain in hypochondriac region, fullness in chest relieved + aggravated by emotions, sensation of fullness in chest, sighing, better w/ belching + passing gas, anorexia, poor appetite
T: thin, white coating
P: Wiry
LR Qi Stagnation
The follwing are S/sx of Hypochondria Pain due to ________________?
Chief S/sx of pain in the hypochondria region that comes + goes w/
constant, local, fixed stabbing hypochondriac pain, worse at night (also tumours characteristic)
T: Purple w/ petechiae

(Can be LR or GB tumor or lumps)
Blood Stasis
The follwing are S/sx of Hypochondria Pain due to ____________?
Chief S/sx of pain in the hypochondria region that comes + goes w/
distending hypochondria pain, aggravated by pressure, dry + bitter taste in mouth (GB), sensation of fullness in chest (dampness blocks Qi), anorexia, nausea, vomiting, bright yellow urine, jaundice
T: thick, yellow-greasy coating
P: Rapid + Slippery + Wiry
Damp-Heat Accumulation
___________ is an extension of LR Qi
Bile
The follwing are S/sx of Hypochondria Pain due to _____________?
Chief S/sx of pain in the hypochondria region that comes + goes w/
dull + constant pain, worse on exertion, dry mouth + throat, dizziness, blurred vision, dry eyes,
(*if deficient Heat- insomnia, 5 center heat, restlessness, etc., not always with Empty or Deficient Heat)
T: Red w/ scanty coating
P: Rapid + Thready + Wiry

Main treatment points for Hypochondria Pain
LR-14: Spreads LR Qi + activates channel
SJ-6: Soothe + Regulates whole body’s Qi + Clear Heat + benefits chest + lateral coastal region
GB-34: He-sea + Hui-meeting of Sinews + Spread LR Qi + Clears GB Damp-Heat
ST-36: Tonifys SP + pacify ST + relieve ST distension (Wood attacking Earth)
What is one of the treatment principles to treat LR Qi Stagnation?
Tonify SP
