Headache Flashcards
Etiology, Pathogensis, Patterns, S/sx, Treatment Principles + Principle Points
What are the 2 main characteristics of Headaches either caused by External Evils or Interior injuries?
Malnutrition + disharmony of Qi + Blood
Obstruction or blockage of channel
What are the 3 etiologies of Headaches caused by External Evils?
Wind-Cold
Wind-Heat
Wind-Dampness
What is the pathogenesis of Headaches caused by External Evils?
Evils impede channels causing blockages
Evils impede channels causing the failure of Lucid Yang to rise
What are 3 other excess etiologies that cause internally-injured Headaches?
- Injury to brain
- Emotional depression
- Improper diet
What is the pathogenesis of injury to the brain resulting in Headache?
Qi Stagnation or Blood Stasis obstructing channels causing pain
What causes headache pain?
Blockage of channels = Blockage of Qi or Blood= pain
OR
Malnutrition= Lack of Qi + Blood, sluggish flow of Qi + Blood which can also cause Blockage = pain
What is the pathogenesis of emotional depression resulting in Headaches?
Stagnation of Liver Qi invading the 7 orifices
Can result in a depletion of Yin-Blood which causes upward of Liver Yang
What is the pathogenesis of improper diet resulting in Headaches?
Improper diet leads to dampness or phlegm. Phlegm can stagnate causing an invasion of the clear orifices
What are the deficient etiologies of Headaches?
Congenitial deficiencies and loss of blood or essence resulting in SP + ST Xu and KI Essence Xu
What are the 2 main pathogenesis of deficient Headaches?
Qi + Blood Xu
Hollow Sea of Marrow
How does one differentiate headache pain?
Diagnosed by channel
Forehead- Yangming (ST + LI)
Temporal- Shaoyang (GB + SJ)
Vertex- Jueyin (LR)
Occiput- Taiyang (BL)
How does one differentiate between a headache that is caused by External Evils + Internally-injured?
External Evil causes persistent headaches radiating to the neck and back with a sudden onset. Can also be accompanied by other External Evil S/sx
Internally-injured causes lingering and intermittent headaches with a slow onset. Often accompanied by vertigo and can be triggered by emotions or exertion
