Dysentery Flashcards
Define Dysentery.
A disorder characterized by increased frequency of bowel movements, abdominal pain, tenemus and stools containing bloody pus.
How does one differentiate diarrhea + dysentery?
Both have increased frequency of bowel movements and abdominal pain.
Dysentery has tenesmus + stools with bloody pus. Also is acute.
Define tenesmus.
The feeling of incomplete bowel or bladder emptying and a feeling of urgency.
When does dysentery usually occur?
In Summer + Late-summer
The following are ________ med disorders.
Bacterial dysentery
Amebic dysentery
Ulcerative colitis
Food poisoning
Western
What are the 2 main etiologies of dysentery?
External Invasion of Seasonal Evils (ie: Heat Toxin + Dampness)
Improper Diet
What is the etiology of dysentery?
The etiology of dysentery usually involves attack by epidemic heat and dampness, or the intake of raw, cold or contaminated foods.
What happens when the intestinal tract is obstructed?
When the intestinal tract is obstructed by external evils and food matter, the large intestine fails to pass fecal material, leading to stagnation of qi and blood.
What are the consequences of stagnation in the intestinal tract?
Eventually, the connecting vessels (blood vessels) are injured (caused by Epidemic Heat Toxin), and the feces become mixed with pus and blood.
Dysentery is located in the _____ intestine + closely related to ____ + ________.
Large Intestine
Spleen + Stomach
(Not KI like diarrhea)
_____ dysentery usually occurs in Summer or Late-Summer while _____ dysentery can occur at any time of the year
Acute
Chronic

Chronic Intermittent Dysentery
Dysentery
How to differentiate between diarrhea + dysentery?
Diarrhea-
Abdominal pain: pain relieved by BM
Stools: loose, thin, watery w/ smooth BM
Quality: no obvious abnormality
Dysentery-
Abdominal pain: pain is NOT relieved by BM w/ tenesmus
Stools: contain blood or pus, unsmooth BM
Quality: blood + pus
The following are S/sx of Dysentery due to __________?
Abdominal pain, tenesmus, blood mixed w/ bloody pus, burning sensation in anus, dark, scanty urine, irritability, thirst, fever and maybe aversion to cold
T: Red w/ yellow, greasy coating
P: Rapid + Slippery
*Damp-Heat
The following are S/sx of Dysentery due to __________?
A critical condition caused by heat toxin and characterized by high fever and coma, sudden onset, abdominal pain, tenesmus, blood mixed w/ bloody pus, thirst, headache, irritability
T: Dark red or crimson w/ dry, yellow coating
P: Rapid + Slippery
*Epidemic Toxin
The following are S/sx of Dysentery due to __________?
Abdominal pain, tenesmus, blood mixed w/ bloody pus, sticky stools, pus is more dominant, oppression in chest, fullness in epigastrium, aversion to cold, likes warmth, loss of appetite, no thirst, heaviness in limbs/body/head
T: Pale w/ greasy coating
P: Soggy + Slow
Cold-Damp
The following are S/sx of Dysentery due to __________?
Abdominal pain, tenesmus, blood mixed w/ bloody pus, fresh blood + thick mucus, burning pain in abdomen, loss of appetite, irritability, thirst
T: Red w/ scanty coating
P: Rapid + Thready
Yin Xu
The following are S/sx of Dysentery due to __________?
Abdominal pain, tenesmus, blood mixed w/ bloody pus, liquid stool, incontinence of stools, dull cold abd. pain, loss of appetite, fatigue, cold body/limbs, lower back + knee pain
T: pale + puffy
P: Deep + Thready
SP + KI Yang Xu
The following are S/sx of Dysentery due to __________?
Abdominal pain, tenesmus, blood mixed w/ bloody pus, recurring showing no signs of improvement, fatigue, lethargy + loss of appetite
T: Pale w/ greasy coating
P: Thready
