Localization of Function Flashcards
What is localization of function?
Functions such as movement, speech/language and memory are performed in distinct regions of the brain. The opposite view is the brain acts holistically to perform functions.
What does contralateral mean?
Each hemisphere of the brain controls the opposite side of the body.
What is Hemispheric Lateralization?
Each hemisphere of the brain is specialized to perform different functions.
Where are the language centers located?
IN the left hemisphere.
Where are visuospatial tasks done?
In the right hemisphere of the brain.
What are the areas that are in both sides of the brain?
motor, somatosensory, visual and auditory cortices
Where are the Broca’s/Wernicke’s area.
are only in the left hemisphere.
What is the function of the motor cortex?`
Voluntary muscle motor movements across the body. It is contralateral.
what’s the function of the Broca’s Area?
Located in the left frontal love only, Broca’s area is responsible for speech production. If damages you can have difficulty doing fluent speech.
What’s the function of the Wernicke’s area?
Located in the left hemisphere only, responsible for speech comprehension, and difficulty understanding speech.
What is the function of the auditory cortex?
receives and processes sound information from ears. Located in both hemispheres.
What is the function of the Visual Cortex?
Visual processing each hemisphere receives info from opposite visual field.
