Local Anesthetics Flashcards
Enhances local anesthetic activity
Hyperkalemia
MOA:
block voltage dependent Na channels, reducing influx of Na and preventing depolarization
Antagonizes local aneshetic activity
Hypercalcemia
Only local anesthetic that is not a vasodilator
Coccaine
Ester local anesthetic
Procaine, benzocaine, cocaine, tetracaine
Also for extravasation complications from venipuncture, inadvertent intraarteriao injections
Procaine
May be used topically
Benzocaine
Has intrinsic sympathomimetic activity
Cocaine
May be used as spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthersia, topical opthalmkc anesthesia
Tetracaine
Amide local anesthetics include
Lidocaine, prilocaine, bupivacaine, ropivacaine
group 1B antiarrhythmic; used post MI and for digitalis toxicity
Lidocaine
Also used as dental anesthesia
Prilocaine
May develop methhemoglobinemia
Prilocaine
May be used as epidural or intrathecal anesthesia
Bupivacaine
May cause severe cardiovascular toxicity? Tx?
Bupivacaine; tx with INTRALIPID
