LO3 - Virtualisation: Flashcards
What is Virtualisation?
Virtualisation is a technical term for separating sections of a device to sever different purposes.
What is Autonomic Computing?
Autonomic computing is a scenario in which the IT environment will be able to manage itself based on perceived activity.
What is Utility Computing?
Utility computing is where computing processing power is seen as a utility and can be payed for as it is needed.
What is the primary goal of Virtualisation?
To centralise administrative tasks while improving scalability and work loads.
What is a Virtual Client?
A virtual client is a full desktop environment where the processing takes place remotely.
What is a Centralised Virtual Desktop?
A centralised virtual desktop hosts and manages the operating system in a data centre, but the virtual desktop image is delivered over a network to an endpoint device.
What is a Hosted Virtual Desktop?
A hosted virtual desktop is a full client-user environment which is run as a virtual machine on a server and accessed remotely.
What is a Remote Virtual Desktop?
A remote virtual desktop is a remotely located device with a preconfigured image of the operating system and applications which is separate from the end device that is used to access it.
What is Network Virtualisation?
Network virtualisation is a method of combining the available resources in a network.
What is Storage Virtualisation?
Storage virtualisation is the pooling of physical storage from multiple network storage devices into what appears to be just one storage area.
What is Server Virtualisation?
Server virtualisation is the masking of server resources from server users to prevent the complex management of multiple different servers.
What are some benefits of Virtualisation?
1) Costs are cheaper in the long term.
2) Higher performance for lower cost.
3) Programs can be tested within a safe environment.
What are some drawbacks of Virtualisation?
1) If not set up correctly, users could face serious performance issues.
2) If a single physical system fails, the impact will be greater.
3) Initial set up is very complex.
4) Easier for hackers to take more information at once - data is centrally stored.
5) Initial high investment.
What is Cloud Technology?
Cloud technology is accessed via a network. Typically resembling a cloud server which is an example of storage virtualisation.
What is a Private Cloud?
Private data centre that can be accessed by employees for use as a flexible and convenient data store.
