What is Computer Software?
Computer software refers to the programs and applications that run on a system. Made up of source code.
What is Code?
Code is a group of symbols, characters, words, letters, or figures used to represent messages and instructions.
What is Source Code?
Source code is code written by programmers in a high or low level programming language, which is converted into a list of instructions for the computer to provide various functions and actions.
What is Open Source Software?
Software produced by the programmer, made available to anyone who wishes to debug, improve, or modify the code.
What is Closed Source Software?
Software where the source code is restricted for users to view or modify, the software can be bought for the rights to use, however the consumer does not own the software or source code.
What is Off-the-Shelf Software?
Any software that is made for general use, for a wide variety of different customers and their requirements.
What is Bespoke Software?
Software that has been custom designed for a specific user or organisation, and to carry out specific functions.
What is Shareware?
Software that allows a user to trial the program for a limited time, later forcing the user to either purchase the software or stop using it.
What is Freeware?
Freeware software is completely free and available to download and use. Typically closed source software that earns money through advertisements.
What is Embedded Software?
Software embedded within a large computer system.
