what is discriminatory practice?
unfair or unjustified treatment, based upon protected characteristic
what is meant by protected characteristic?
- protected by law
- against the law if broken
what are the two types of discriminatory practice?
- indirect (not on purpose/unintentionally)
- direct (on purpose/intentionally)
what are the 8 protected characteristics?
- race
- culture
- disability
- social class
- age
- gender
- sexual ordination
- religion
what is meant by race?
a group of people with specific characteristics based on their skin colour, nationality or ethic origin.
EG: NHS ask people to classify their race as white, Asian, black, mixed race, Chinese ect.
what is discrimination on the basis of race called?
racism
what is meant by culture?
- a age group of people who share the same customs, language, dress, beliefs and values.
- perceived by some as being different (EG: travellers communities are often victims of discrimination).
what is meant by disability?
- defined as a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative impact on a persons ability to do regular daily activities.
what is discrimination on the basis of disability called?
disablism
what is meant by social class?
- defined by economic or educational status - people grouped in hierarchical social categories.
- people sometimes have unfavourable views of others and make judgements because of their social class.
what are the different social classes?
- upper class
- middle class
- working class
- lower class
what is meant by age?
- people are sometimes discriminated against because of their age, where there is negative perceptions about teenagers and older people.
discrimination on the basis of someone’s age is called what?
ageism.
what is meant by gender?
refers to whether someone is male, female, transgender and gender neutral.
what is discrimination on the basis of someone gender?
sexism.
what is meant by sexual orientation?
it’s to do with discrimination due to someone’s sexuality, if they are bisexual, gay or lesbian.
what is discrimination on the basis of an individuals sexual orientation?
homophobic
what is meant by someone’s religion?
- a system of values and beliefs.
- can be very important to people and influence the way they live their life.
- religious discrimination could involve a person’s religious needs not being met.
discrimination can also take place in the form of abuse, what are the 5 different types?
- neglect.
- sexual.
- verbal.
- physical.
- emotional/psychological.
