what does it mean if someone is lacking mental capacity?
people are unable to express their opinions or example what is happening to them. so they are unable to make decisions for themselves or the care that they will receive.

why might someone with a learning disability not report any abuse that they are receiving?
being ashamed.

fear of the possible consequences.
being very reliant on their carers (losing the support).
what is the definition of a physical disability?
its the long term or impairment of your body’s physical function. it might be genetic, or be someone from before/during birth. or even later on in life through illness or injury.

what is meant by dementia?
it’s a brood umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive neurological disorders.

- almost a 3rd of disabled children and teenagers face emotional or physical abuse.
- 20% face neglect (twice as many are likely to face bulling.)
- one in ten face sexual violence (including rape)
- 31.7% of children have faced some kind of violence.

what is a learning disability?
it’s reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with every day activities’.
it usually takes them longer to learn (by repetition and patience) and they will need support to develop new skills, understand complicated information and interact with people.
why would someone with a learning disability be more likely to get abused.?
difficult to understand them.
unable to report (if non-communicative).
unable to explain what happening to them.
unable to defend themselves.
lack of understanding.
easy target.
what makes independent living facilities more liking to have abuse?
individuals are more likely to be targeted for abuse. they are deemed to need less care and support so they aren’t getting as many visits from care workers leading to neglect.
what makes health service (GP surgeries, physiotherapy practices) more likely receive abuse?
lack of training to meet wide variety of needs.
lack of safe and effective care.
understaffed = less time to carry out easy jobs
invasive practices = more opportunities for abuse.
what makes abuse more likely for adults and children in health and social care settings?
perceived to be safer places for people giving people trust and power so people will exploit and use them.
people might fear losing the home and not report.
people might have a fear of getting the staff into trouble.
where are the types of the areas that abuse might happen to children and adults living in these areas?
hostels, women’s refuge centre, mother & baby centre and temporary accommodation.
what makes abuse more likely to happen in a care service with institutional practices?
rigid routines.
intrusive/invasive practices where they aren’t respecting peoples privacy, comfort and unique needs (like diversity)
why is a child in foster care more likely to be abused?
on average a child being in foster care has at least 10 different homes before the age of 18. making them more vulnerable to be abused, where are large amount is sexual.
examples of care settings for children are….
police care, foster care, social service care and a children’s home.
what does looked after children mean?
a child is ‘looked after’ if they are in care of the authorities for more than 24 hours.
what is a hearing impairment?
it’s partial or total inability to hear, a deaf person has little or no hearing.
why is someone with sensory impairment more likely to be abused?
- easy targets.
- can’t report the situation as well.
- if your blind you can’t see if someone is following you.
- if your deaf you can’t hear if anyone if following you.
- if your deaf you might have difficulty speaking and then fear reporting abuse as your embarrassed.
what is visual impairment?
it’s the term used to express any kind of vision loss.
why is abuse more likely if your homeless?
people may be staying in unsafe areas, they are isolated away with no trust in anyone or way of reporting the abuse.
what abuse do homeless people generally become affected by?
- verbal attacks.
- bullying.
- sexually exploited/ used.
- mate crime
