Liver physiology Flashcards
What is the architectural building block of the liver?
Liver lobule
What do central veins from the liver lobules join to?
Hepatic vein
What runs along the corner of each lobule?
Portal triad
What does the portal triad consist of?
Hepatic artery
Hepatic portal vein
Bile duct
PLUS
Branch of vagus nerve
Lymph vessels
What are found between hepatocyte plates?
Liver sinusoids
How much bile does the liver produce per day?
Between 0.25 and 1L of bile a day
What are the 2 main functions of bile?
Emulsify fats in the small intestine
AND
Eliminate substances from the liver
What allows the liver to recycle and preserve bile?
Enterohepatic circulation
Describe the anatomy of the biliary tree.
Interlobular bile ducts > right and left hepatic ducts > common hepatic duct (+cystic duct) > common bile duct (+pancreatic duct).
How much bile is produced by the liver in 24 hours?
400-800ml
Which hormone causes the release of bile?
CCK
What are the 2 functions of bile acids?
Emulsification of lipid aggregates
Solubilisation and transport of lipids (micelles)
What role does CCK play in the secretion of bile?
Causes contraction of gall bladder and CBD = delivers bile to the gut
What role does secretin play in the secretion of bile?
Stimulates biliary duct cells to secrete bicarbonate and water to expand the volume of bile
