Listeria monocytogenes Flashcards
1
Q
What is Listeria monocytogenes
A
- important cause of disease in man and animal
2
Q
describe the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes
A
- Bacterium itself is short, gram positive, non-spore forming and facultatively aerobic rod
3
Q
What are the two different types of Listeriosis
A
- Perinatal
- Adult
4
Q
What is Perinatal Listeriosis
A
- Early onset - intrauterine infection, sepsis and death before birth
- Late onset - infected at birth, meningitis and sepsis within 2-3 weeks. Significant mortality
5
Q
What is Adult Listeriosis
A
- immunocompetent individuals it causes “flu-like symptoms” and gastro upset - resolution in a couple of weeks
- In immunocompromised it causes meningo-encephalitis and bacteraemia
6
Q
What is the treatment for Listeriosis disease
A
- penicillin and gentamicin
7
Q
What is the source of infection
A
- infected animals, silage, infected humans
- outbreaks associated with dairy products, luncheon meat and fruit and veg
- Normal route of infection is gastrointestinal
8
Q
Where are Streptomyces most abundant in
A
- Soil organisms that have mycelial growth and generate spores at the ends of terminal hyphae
9
Q
What are the features of Streptomyces
A
- Strict aerobes
- Nutritionally versatile
- Produce many antibiotics
10
Q
What are the features of Corynebacteria
A
- Diverse group of gram +, aerobic, non motile club-shape rods
11
Q
What does Corynebacterium diptheriae cause
A
- Diptheria disease
12
Q
What is Diptheria disease
A
- An upper respiratory tract disease characterised by sore throat, low-grade fever and an adherent member of the tonsils, pharynx and/or nose
13
Q
How is Diptheria disease spread
A
- Spread by droplets or by contact
14
Q
What are the symptoms of Corynebacterium diptheriae
