Lipidssss Flashcards
Are lipids insoluble in water
Yes
What solvents are lipids soluble in???
Alcohols and Acetone (organic solvents)
What are the main groups of lipids
Phospholipids and triglycerides (fats and oils)
What is the structure of triglycerides?
Three glycerols and 1 fatty acid.
What is the structure of phospholipids???? Come on eoooop hoop shoop soup egg
2 glycerols, 1 fatty acid and a phosphate
What is the bond that joins lipids together
Ester bonds
What are the 4 main roles of lipids
Cell surface membrane- and membranes around organelles phospholipids contribute to the flexibility of membrane( bcos the long hydrocarbon chains allow for the fatty acidmove freely in the interior of the membrane
Source of energy - when
oxidised lipids
provid more than twice the amount of energy than carbohydrates for the same mass and release valuable water
Waterproofing- lipids are insoluble in water- obviously.
Insulation - fats are slow conductors of heat and when stored between beneath the body surface help to retain body heat. They are also electrical insulators in the myelin sheath around the nerve cells
Why are triglycerides classed as metabolic water water sources???
Due to the high ratio of O and H atoms. When they are oxidised and undergo condensation reactions to create water bonds they will produce water woop for extremophiles like camels where there is a water deficit, it is advantageous to their survival in their environment.
Do triglycerides affect water potential???
No because they are large and hydrophobic- insolvable in water
What will triglycerides having a low mass affect
Store without increasing mass and is good for movement.
Define a saturated fatty acid
A hydrocarbon chain that has only single bonds between carbon atoms
Define unsaturated fatty acids
At least one carbon carbon double bond between carbons
What is the test for lipids
Emulsion test:
- Dissolve the sample in ethanol
- add distilled water
- if a while emulsion appears then it is a positive test for lipid.
