gym rat lover Flashcards
what type of bond is between protein
peptide
how many types of proteins are there
4
what is a primary protein structure like
a long chain sequence of amino acids
how many amino acids are there
20
what is contained within an amino acid
amino group - NH2
carboxyl group - COOH hydrogen atom - H2
R group - a variable group ach AA has the option of 20
how do proteins form
condensations
describe a secondary protein structure
long polypeptide chain twisted into a 3-D shape such as a coil know as an alpha helix
why do secondary proteins have the structure they do
the amine group is positively charged whilst the o of the c=o group has a negative charge and cause weak hydrogen bonds to form
describe a tertiary protein structure
complex 3D structure
what are the common bonds between tertiary proteins
disulphide bridges - fairly dtrong and therefore not easily broken
ionic bonds between carboxyl and amino groups that are not involved in forming peptide bonds. they are weaker than disulphide bonds and are easily broken by changes in pH
hydrogen bonds - loads of them but weakkk
describe quaternary structures
large proteins often form complex molecules containing many peptide bonds linked in various ways
what affects how a protein functions
;the sequence of amino acids
what is the test for proteins
biuret
place sdample solution in a test tube and add an equal vol of sodium hydroxide solution at room temp
add after drops of of very dilute copper sulfate solution and mix gently
a purple solution indicates the presence of peptide bond, if no protein is detected then the solution remains blue
