Life Science- Nervous System Flashcards
Main organs
Bargain, sociable cord, nerves and sense organs.
Brain
Inside your skull. Controls all functions in the body and are responsible for memory and feelings.
Spinal cord
A thick bundle of nerves that goes down from your brain to the bottom of your spine. The vertebrae of the spine protects the spinal cord. Most of the messages that come from the nerves of your body travel through your spinal cord on their way to the brain.
Nerves
Carry information to the sound cord and brain, and carry messages away to rest of the body.
Sense organs
Pick up stimuli for the body. Nose, tongue, ears, eyes and skin.
Processes
Sensing, sending and receiving impulses, and regulating temperature.
Sensing
Nose for smelling, tongue for tasting, eyes for sight, ears for hearing and the skin to sense changes in the temperature as well as to feel pain and pressure.
Sending and receiving impulses
Sense organs send messages to the brain via the sensory nerves to tell it what is happening. The brain responds to the stimuli by sending messages along motor nerves.
Regulating temperature
The brain regulates the body temperature. It controls the amount of heat produced and the amount of heat lost by the skin to keep the body temperature constant a 37°C. The skin plays.,yes and important role too.
Health issues
Deafness, blindness and short-sightedness
Deafness
Can’t hear with one or both ears. Infections such as meningitis, exposure to very loud noises and damage to the head in an accident can cause deafness. When one or more relatives are born deaf there is a higher chance of deafness being inherited.
Blindness
Not able to see properly. Can be caused by infections, damage to the head in an accident, diabetes and or eye muscle deterioration. Sometimes lens becomes white and the person can’t see (cataract). Cataracts can be removed during surgery.
Short-sightedness
Can only see near objects clearly, but objects that are far away are blurred. Occurs when the eyeball changes shape. Results in the imagine not falling on the layer that picks up light in the eye. Glasses, contact lenses or laser surgery can be used or carried out to correct the problem,
Effects of alcohol and drugs on the brain
Change the way nerves in the brain pass messages to each other.
Can damage the nerves in the brain that are involved in memory and learning.
Also a risk of permanent.
Can fool people into thinking they are smarter or good fun to be with.
Makes them less able to judge their own behaviour.
Also kills brain cells, which don’t regenerate.
Concussion
Brain hits the skull causing bruising.
Can damage brain cells which can’t regenerate.
