Chemistry- Rust Flashcards
Rust is a
Form of corrosion
Only occurs on the
Surface of iron that is exposed to oxygen and water
Iron reacts with
Water and oxygen to form iron hydroxide (orange and fuzzy)
Iron hydroxide dries
Out and loses its water forming iron oxide (Fe2O3)
Fe2O3
Rust
Painting
Prevent rusting by applying a layer of paint. The paint layer prevents oxygen and water from coming into contact with iron.
Electroplating
Coat iron or steel in a thin layer of chromium or zinc.
It involves the passing of an electric current through a zinc-based or chromium-based solution. Metals atoms are then allowed to deposit on the iron or steel that is dipped into the solution.
More expensive than painting.
Chromium and zinc don’t rust.
Also improves the appearance of the object.
2Fe + O2 ->
Fe2O3 (unbalanced)
