Life history Flashcards
life history
study of reproduction/growth of a population
what’s the trade off
size of eggs and number of eggs
what do larger eggs mean
less offspring, more energy for swimming
larger eggs mean
less gene flow
higher mortality means
more energy into reproduction and early maturity
GSI
measure of energy in body used for reproduction
r selection
small animals. lots of eggs, per capita increase of rate, for populations that are taking over new habitats, unpredictable, unstable, early reproduction, high population growth
k selection
populations with carrying capacity, stable/predictable, late maturity, less eggs, large animals
chi squared test
helps to see what parameters populations fall into (clumped, random etc)
what does low value mean
regular distribution
periodic history
late maturity, low juvenile survival, lots of offspring, stable conditions
opportunistic
early maturity, low juvenile survival, unpredictable
equilibrium
high juvenile survival, few offspring
