Life Cycle of a Retrovirus Flashcards
How do retroviruses replicate?
use of a reverse transcriptase to copy their genomic sequence into DNA for insertion in the host chromosome
Step 1
Virion attaches to the host cell
Step 2
Virion enters cell; uncoating releases two + strand RNA, reverse transcriptase, integrase, protease
Step 3
Reverse transcriptase copies viral RNA to make dsDNA
Step 4
dsDNA is inserted into host genome by viral integrase; provirus is replicated when host cell replicates; provirus does not excise from host genome
Step 5
Provirus can be transcribed and translated
Step 6
Assembly/maturation
Step 7
Release; budding; retrovirus acquires envelope with attached spikes
What are the three proteins in retroviruses?
reverse transcriptase, protease, integrase
When is the provirus replicated?
when the host cell replicates
Does the provirus excise from the cell?
no
