Levels of Security in LIS Flashcards
The patient record (e.g. ID Number, name, sex, age, location) must be created in the LIS prior to the tests, which is received automatically from the hospital registration system when a patient is admitted.
Register Patient
The attending physician orders the tests for the patient and the procedure is requested as part of the laboratory’s morning blood collection rounds.
These orders are entered into the CIS and they are sent to he LIS electronically.
Order Tests
The LIS prints a list of all patients who have to be drawn, including the appropriate barcode for each.
Caregivers or nurses can alternatively collect the sample and send to the lab for testing.
Collect Sample
Once sample arrives in the lab, its status is updated in the LIS from “collected” to “received” by scanning the sample container’s barcode ID.
LIS then transmits test order to specific analyzer.
Receive Sample
Sample is loaded to analyzer, and the barcode is then read. Worklist is required only when order was not transmitted by LIS.
The worklist should contain the names of the patients and the tests ordered on each with a space next to each for typing the result.
Run Sample
Analyzer then produces the results and sends the same to the LIS. Result is only viewable by the MTOD until it is released for general viewing.
LIS can also be programmed to flag critical results.
Review Results
Technologist is responsible for the release of results. The LIS can be programmed to release normal results.
Only unflagged results are reviewed and released at the same time. These results are automatically transmitted to the CIS upon release.
Release Results
The physician, nurse, or other authorized personnel can now view the results on the CIS screen.
Reports can be printed when needed.
