Lesson 9 - Lymphatic & Immune System Flashcards
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
Syndrome associated iwth suppression of the immune system and marked by opportunisitc infections, secondary neoplasms, and neurological problems.
allergy
Abnormal sensitivity acquired by exposure to the antigen.
anaphylaxis
Hypersensitivity to previously encountered foreign proteins or other antigen.
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
A virus that causes AIDS. Destroys T-cell helper lymphocytes and thus disrupts the cell-mediated immune response.
immune system
The defense of the body against foreign organisms such as bacteria and viruses.
immunity
The body’s ability to resist foreign organisms and toxins that damage tissues and organs.
lymph
Thin, watery fluid found within lymphatic vessels and collected from tissues throughout the body.
lymph nodes
Stationary lymph tissue along lymph vessels.
lymphoma
Malignant tumor of lymph nodes and lymph tissue.
spleen
Organ near the stomach that produces, stores, and eliminates blood cells.
tonsils
Masses of lymph tissue in the back of the oropharynx
tonsillectomy
The surgical removal of the tonsils.
vaccine
Weakened or killed microorganisms administered to induce immunity to infection or disease.
vaccination
An injection that contains a modified pathogen or toxin that stimulates lymphocytes to produce antibodies without having undergone an attack of the disease.
