acne
Papular and pustular eruption of the skin.
albino
(albino/o=white) Person with skin deficient in pigment (melanin).
alopecia
Absence of hair from areas where it normally grows.
callus
Increased growth of cells in the epidermis layer caused by pressure or friction.
cellulitis
Diffuse, acute infection of the skin marked by local heat, redness, pain and swelling.
collagen
Structural protein found in the skin and connective tissue.
cuticle
Band of epidermis at the base and sides of the nail plate.
decubitus ulcer
Bedsores; caused by pressure that results from lying one position.
dermatitis
Inflammation of the dermal layer, marked by itching and scratching.
dermatologist
Specialist in the study of the skin.
dermis
Middle layer of the skin
diaphoresis
Profuse sweating.
ecchymosis (singular)
ecchymoses (plural)
(ec=out; chym=pour) Bluish-black mark (macule on the skin; black-and-blue mark.
eczema
Inflammatory skin disease with erythermatous, papulovesicular lesions.
epidermis
Outermost layer of the skin.
epithelium
Layer of skin cells forming the outer and inner surfaces of the body.
fissure
Groove or crack like sore.
gangrene
Death of tissue associated with loss of blood supply.
hair follicle
Sac within which each hair grows.
impetigo
Bacterial inflammatory skin disease characterized by besicles, pustules, and crusted-over lesions.
integumentary system
The skin and its accessory structures such as hair and nails.
keloid
Thickened scar that occurs after trauma or surgical incision.
keratin
(kerat/o=hard, horny tissue) Hard protein material found in the epidermis, hair, and nails. Keratin means horn and is commonly found in the horns of animals.
lipocyte
(lip/o=fat) Fat cell.
lipoma
Mass of fat.
liposuction
Removal of subcutaneous fat tissue through a tube that is introduced into the fatty area via a small incision.
lunula
The half-moon -shaped, white area at the base of a nail.
macule
Discolored (often reddened) fat lesion. (i.e. freckles)
malignant melanoma
Cancerous (=malignant) growth composed of melanocytes.
melanin
(melan/o=black) Major pigment that give the skin color. It is formedby melanocytes in the epidermis.
nevus
Pigmented lesion of the skin. (i.e. mole)
nodule
Solid, elevated lesion more than 1 cm in diameter.
papule
Small, lass than 1 cm in diameter, solid elevation of the skin (i.e. pimples)
pore
Tiny opening on the surface of the skin.
pruritus
Itching
psoriasis
Chronic, recurrent dermatosis marked by itchy, scaly, red plaques covered by silvery gray scales.
purpura
Merging ecchymoses and petechia over any part of the body.
scabies
A contagous, parasitic infection of the skin with intense pruritus.
sebaceous gland
Oil-secreting gland in the dermis that is associated with hair folicles.
sebum (seb/o)
Oily substance secreted by sebaceous glands that leaves the body through its pores, lubricating the surface of the skin.
skin biopsy
bx=abbreviation for biopsy
Suspected malignant skin lesions are removed and sent to the pathology lab for microscopic examination.
striae

(cutane/o=skin) The innermost layer of the skin, containing fat tissue.
sweat
A watery secretion produced by the sweat glands that cools the body as it evaporates from the skins surface.
ulcer
Open sore on the skin or mucous membranes.
urticaria
Hives. Acute allergic reaction in which red, round wheals develop on the skin.
varicella
(Chicken pox) Rash of the skin due to a viral infection.
vesicle
Small collection of clear fluid; blister.
