astigmatism
Defective curvature of the cornea or lens of the eye.
amblyopia
(ambly/o=dull, dim; -opia=vision) Lazy eye. Partial loss of sight due to the failure of eyes to work together to focus on same point.
audiometry
Testing the sense of hearing.
blepharitis (blephar/o)
Inflammation of the eyelid.
cataract
Clouding of the lens, causing decreased vision.
cerumen
Ear wax.
conjunctivitis
Inflammation of conjunctiva. (pinkeye)
glaucoma
(glauc/o=gray) Increased intraocular pressure results in damage to the retina and optic nerve.
hyperopia
Farsightedness.
iris
Colored portion of the eye.
LASIK
Use of a laser to correct errors of refraction (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism)
myopia
Nearsightedness
opthalmologist
A medical doctor who specializes in treating disorders of the eye.
ophthalamoscopy
Visual examination of the interior of the eye with an ophthalmoscope (done when the pupil is dilated).
optometrist
Non-medical person who can examine eyes to determine vision problems and prescribe lenses (doctor of optometry; OD)
otolaryngologist
One who specializes in ears, nose, and throat (ENT.)
pupil
cor/o or pupill/o
Dark opening of the eye, surrounded by the iris, through which light rays pass.
retina (retin/o)
Light-sensitive nerve cel layer of the eye containing photoreceptor cells (cones and rods)
tinnitus
Sensation of noises (ringing, buzzing, whistling, booming) in the ears.
tympanoplasty
Surgical reconstruction of the eardrum.
vertigo
Sensation of irregular or whirling motion either of oneself or of external objects.
visual acuity test
Clarity of the vision is assessed.
