Lesson 34 - Cancer Flashcards
1
Q
What 2 genes is mitosis controlled by?
A
Oncogenes
Tumour supressor genes
2
Q
What needs to happen to oncogenes and TS genes to lead to cancer?
A
- Activation of oncogenes
- Inactivation of TS genes
3
Q
What are Carcinogenic/ mutagenic factors?
A
Factors that increase the risk of (cancer) mutations
4
Q
What are some examples of carcinogenic/ mutagenic factors?
A
- excessive smoking
- excessive sunburn
- unhealthy eating habits (e.g. fast food, sugary snacks)
- inactive lifestyle
- High BMI
5
Q
Treating cancer
A
Involves killing rapidly dividing cells by blocking a part of the cell cycle eg:
- Preventing DNA replication
- Inhibiting metaphase by interfering with spindle fiber formation
6
Q
What is a problem with cancer treatment?
A
It can also interfere with the cell cycle of normal cells that normally divide rapidly (causing damage to them)
