Lesson 22: Orthomyxoviridae Flashcards
The Orthomyxoviridae is a family of RNA viruses, which includes five genera:
Influenzavirus A,
Influenzavirus B,
Influenzavirus C,
Isavirus, and
Thogotovirus
The Orthomyxoviridae is a family of RNA viruses, which includes five genera:
Influenzavirus A,
Influenzavirus B,
Influenzavirus C,
Isavirus, and
Thogotovirus.
All these viruses were grouped under ________ (myxa meaning mucus) due to
their affinity to mucins.
myxovirus
Orthomyxoviridae
A novel genus of this family has been recently identified, which includes
Quaranfil, Johnston Atoll, and Lake Chad viruses.
Viruses in the first three genera, which are identified by antigenic differences in
their nucleoprotein (NP) and matrix (M) proteins, cause influenza disease in
vertebrates, including birds, humans, and other mammalian species.
The genus Orthomyxovirus includes influenza viruses, the causative agents of
worldwide epidemics of influenza.
All pandemics in human history were caused by the influenza A virus (1918–
1919, 1957–1958, 1968–1969, 1977, and 2009) due to the emergence of new
subtypes of this virus; the Spanish influenza pandemic in 1918–1919 is the most
devastating one, resulting in the deaths of up to 50 million people worldwide
is an acute respiratory disease of horses
Equine influenza
Equine influenza
Influenza is an acute respiratory disease of horses.
Affects horses of all ages but those between 2 and 6months of age are at
greatest risk.
Avian Influenza
A contagious disease of poultry associated with high mortality, was first
reported in northern Italy in 1878 and was termed “____”.
The term “fowl plaque” was replaced by “highly pathogenic avian influenza
(HPAI)” at the First International Symposium on Avian Influenza in 1981.
