lesson 2.0: cell structure and function study guide Flashcards
what are the three parts to cell theory?
all living things are made of cells
cells are the basic unit of life
all cells come from pre-existing cells
what is the instrument we use to look at cells?
light microscope
what is a eukaryotic cell?
a cell with a true nucleus and membrane bound organelles, most animal cells and plant cells are eukaryotic. differ greatly from prokaryotic cells
whats the function of the cell membrane?
it chooses what can go in and out of a cell
what is the fluid mosaic?
the phospholipid bilayer
what is the consistency of the cell membrane
it is soft and flexible, sort of like oil or jelly
what do the carbohydrates on the outside of the cell do
help cells recognize each-other, also adds a layer of protection for the cell
what is the membrane considered, since it lets some things in but not all?
semi-permeable
why can steroid hormones pass through into the cell so easily? (phospholipid bi-layer)
since they are also made of lipids and are non polar molecules
what do plant cells have that animal cells dont
cell wall and cellulose
where is DNA stored in the cell
inside the nucleus
what surrounds the nucleus, how many layers is it?
nuclear membrane, 2 layers of
what are the holes in the nuclear membrane? what do they do?
nuclear pores, recognizes tags/signals that let nucleic acids and proteins through
