lesson 1.2: homeostasis, positive and negative feedback. Flashcards
what is homeostasis?
the ability to maintain a constant internal environment in response to environmental changes
what is an example of homeostasis?
body temp
blood pressure
blood pH
blood glucose
what are the three functional components of homeostasis control systems?
receptor: to detect change
control centre: to process the change
effector: to produce a response
what is positive feedback? give an example
positive feedback is when the stimulus doesn’t counteract the changes, but instead increases the stimulus. child birth, as contractions increase so does oxytocin
what is negative feedback? give an example
negative feedback is when the body diminishes or counteracts the stimulus to re-establish homeostasis and stability. body temperature, pH, and blood pressure are examples of this.
what is the hypothalamus?
the control centre inside of our brain, it monitors body conditions.
what is the cycle of negative feedback
imbalance in the body
receptor senses it
control centre processes the info
effector gives response
